Preview of tonight's Coronation Street - Mon 1 Jan

Monday January 1st 2018

CHESNEY FEARS HE HAS GONE TOO FAR As the hens (flapper girls) and stags (toy army men) get ready for the evening ahead, Daniel’s intrigued to see the Rovers’ CCTV is hooked up to Peter’s laptop and shows a bird’s eye view of the ginnel. Beth’s produced a DVD of clips of Sinead’s childhood but when Robert hands it to Daniel to play out at the bistro Daniel forms a plan. With the stag do under way, Daniel corners Chesney in the Rovers’ back yard and leads him to believe he’s swapped Beth’s DVD for the CCTV footage of their altercation. Chesney’s horrified and as the hens gather in the bistro to watch the DVD, Chesney bursts in and knocks Beth to the ground in a desperate bid to stop the video. As Beth writhes in agony, Sinead’s appalled, while an intrigued Tracy presses play. Is Chesney about to be exposed? Daniel watches on, pleased with himself. Chesney breaks down, telling Tyrone he’s lost Sinead and Daniel has won.
LUKE LANDS A BLOW AGAINST BIGOTRY Luke’s disapproving as Alya heads to another meeting with the Parker brothers but Alya points out the factory girls are depending on her for their jobs. Having ignored more racist comments, Alya and Aidan see the Parker brothers out but when they find they have a flat tyre, Aidan calls on Luke at the garage to help. When Justin and Dale make racist remarks to Luke he sees red.
ROY FACES A TEST Roy tries to pluck up the courage to tell Brian he needs to move out, whilst Brian tries to pluck up the courage to tell Roy he’s leaving. Carla starts to get cold feet and suggests she returns to Devon after all. Roy implores her to stay and tell her family the truth. What is Carla hiding?
ELSEWHERE Aware of Michelle and Robert’s money woes, Steve calls on Michelle and tells her that there’s been a mistake with their divorce settlement and he owes her £10k. Michelle’s touched by his kindness. Tracy clocks them from across the street and isn’t best pleased.

Right, where to start? They have ruined Daniel's character by having him be this awful, snide, gloating idiot and over what? Sinead? Really? Do me a favour, so unbelievable!

The Parker brothers. Again, really? where are we, the 1970's? Do people, especially in business, really still exist like them? You're in "Love Thy Neighbour" territory, this storyline is so dated.

Carla - I thought we all knew now what she is hiding, kidney failure wasn't it?

And why on earth would Steve want to help Michelle out, who is still always taking the p*ss out of him. She deserves nowt.

After all that, Happy New Year to one and all!

Thanks FN.

Here's hoping Daniel's affair with Carla will get him back to being the determined young man who first got to the street. He managed to be a stone's throw from Oxford despite being deserted and now can't manage his personal life better than the likes of Seb would.
I hope this help from Steve isn't the start of him creeping back to Michelle.Leanne would be my choice for him and barring that Tracy or Shona or anyone but Michelle again. Because of her carping Steve and Liz aren't owners of the Rovers, didn't she get her undeserved pound of flesh from that already?
I don't think the Parker Brothers are anachronistic at all. Racists may have quieted down for a while but the neo-Nazis, white supremacists and alt-Right movements are still around and incidents involving them happen all the time. It's hard to believe none of their sort would ever end up on Coronation Street.

Racism happens but is more subtle than shown on a soap, as are most things. Just as adultery happens in real life but not at the pace or obviousness of it does as on soaps. People get sick in real life but generally don't recover overnight or die on schedule. Similarly depictions of racism have to taken as broad, obvious strokes when in real life often only the person at the receiving end and the one dishing it out are aware of it. These days it is very hard sometimes to convince others you are being victimized because we are in culture of denial and so desperately want to believe we are a better society than we really are.

Daniel is not the only one who's ruined but Sinead is as well telling Daniel to stay away from her one minute because she's engaged to Chesney only to encourage his attention the next aware that he attempted to murder his father and so would go to any lengths to drive Chesney over the edge and yet it's Chesney that's the bad guy in all this?!Perhaps Sinead and Daniel deserve each other and Chesney deserves better!
Although I'm also surprised that Steve is helping Michelle financially [as I doubt she would do the same]I think it shows him as the better man than Robert who flirted with Michelle when she was pregnant and married to Steve wanting to help and maybe Michelle will treat him with more respect in the future?

Does Beth land on a pile of Lego or something? How would being knocked down result in her "writhing in agony"?

Interesting that two women, Carla and Tracy, who are antagonists, end up having the same problem: kidney failure. Wonder if eventually they'll end up being supportive of each other.
